Solome's mission as a designer is to create high quality garments using unique fabrics. Her Ugandan heritage plays an important role in her designs, and she works to merge Western and traditional African silhouettes and fabrics to create modernized garments. Born in Uganda and raised in the US, Solome's designs reflect both parts of the world. She believes that traditional wear in Africa has changed in terms of fabric and shape.
"African women are more embracing of their traditional outfits, but with a modern twist. For example, in Uganda the busuuti (traditional Buganda dress for women) has been modified into a more versatile outfit. I like the fact that women today are reclaiming their traditional attire, and are willing to merge Western with the traditional."
Solome has honed her skills by participating in several fashion shows, including Africa Fashion Week New York 2010, Boston Fashion Week 2010, and Mercedes-Benz of Buffalo Fashion Week 2011.
Solome's favorite place to visit in Uganda is the countryside. "I enjoy seeing its rich vibrant colors along with its many muted colors. I am always in awe of the purity of that environment."
Besides designing, Solome has many other passions: dance, architecture, travel, and most recently, hiking.
